'Last Night at Chateau Marmont,'
by Lauren Weisberger

Plot: In this fourth novel by Lauren Weisberger, the lead character is a nutritionist named Brooke who, at the start of the novel, is working two jobs to support her husband Julian as he pursues his dreams of becoming a famous musician. Early into the novel he hits the big time and, overnight, everything changes. At first, both Julian and Brooke relish this fabulous new lifestyle of jet setting, partying and performing.

However, Julian’s fame, including the endless work commitments and unwanted paparazzi that accompany it soon start to put a massive strain on their marriage. Not to mention the infuriating fact that Julian seems to expect her to quit her jobs, which she loves, to follow him around the world. Then when suspicious looking pictures emerge of Julian and another girl at the same time as he cancels on his best friend’s wedding, Brooke starts to wonder just how far apart her and her husband have drifted and whether there’s any hope they can find their way back to each other.

Review: As with Everyone Worth Knowing, this was a sensational read that I honestly couldn’t put down until it was finished! Being so well written and with a cleverly crafted plot, I really empathised with Brooke, the lead character, as she dealt with the harsh realities of fame and the apparent breakdown of her marriage. In fact, I have to say there were a couple of parts of this book that actually had me crying! Having said that, however, I would definitely recommend this – a really engaging bit of escapism and a fascinating perspective on life in the spotlight.

Lauren Weisberger's books have been so popular, that her novel 'The Devil Wears Prada' was turned into a film starring Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep. (2006)
